Vance County NC Courthouse 1884 Our first Vance County Courthouse was built on land given by Major John H. Young in 1884 at a cost of $8,000.00. The architect was J. R. Thrower and it was built by W. R. Kivett. Our first County Court was held after 13 June 1881 in Claude Hunter’s Tobacco Prize House on Garnett Street. It was located at the present underpass. Our next Superior Court was held 12 December 1881 in the old Presbyterian Church on Breckenridge Street. Next our Court was held in Burwell’s Hall or Cooper’s Opera House in a building built in 1883. The last location of our Court was held in Cooper’s Tobacco Warehouse before the building on Young Street was completed.
